The height of the 28-Buddha statutes is 10 feet and may be one of
the tallest in Sri Lanka in terms of its height. In the garden are
also grown all variants of the Bodhi Tree which the past 28 Buddhas
meditated under before They gained Enlightenment.
The construction of the Garden of 28 Buddhas started in June 2005
which was made possible by the generosity of devotees from Malaysia,
Singapore and Sri Lanka. At that time, the local people were very
excited and happy with this new project and looked forward to its
completion – all the young and old alike selflessly contributing in
kind and/or services – in whatever ways they could and capable of,
working very hard, day and night. Finally, the First Phase of the
beautiful garden was completed and was officially opened to the
public on Kathina Day, 30 October 2005.
Since the opening of the Garden of 28 Buddhas in Peaceland, it has
become well-known in Sri Lanka. At night, the garden is beautifully
lighted up and the silhouette of the illuminated 28 Buddhas statutes
on the hill slope can be seen from afar.
During the day, as the
garden being strategically located along the highway to the renown Kandy Temple of Tooth Relics, all tourist buses will make it a point
to stop for awhile at Peaceland, for the tourists to view and at the
same, revere the 28 Buddhas. Thus, the Garden of 28 Buddhas is a
worthy and noble project undertaken for the Buddha Sasana. |
