Student Travel: Making The Trip!
When it comes to college travel, most college students know how to make a trip as cheap as possible. However, there are plenty of things to keep in mind as far as traveling cross country for merely nickels and dimes in the whole scheme of things. When August comes around in the United States you can definitely see the multitudes of students making their way on the highways and back roads. Their cars are identified by university bumper stickers and packed back seats. Here are a few tips for students when it comes to driving back to school:
• Watch gas prices! Especially with the way the economy has been rolling and the gas prices have been fluctuating, you can find gas prices at all different levels depending on where you are driving. If you are on a longer college journey (one that takes more then one tank of gas!) make sure you look around for the lowest prices. Even if you have a half tank of gas in your car, if you see a great deal you should stop! High gas prices can drain your wallet so be careful and wise with the ways that you fill up!
• Carpool if possible! Carpooling is a wonderful thing! As long as you can find a partner and you have room enough in your vehicle, it is a great idea to carpool. Why? You can split all the expenses 50/ 50, mainly gas! It shouldn’t be too hard to find a carpool partner because someone, somewhere around you is probably going to the same school as you. Start by looking at your old high school or local schools around you.
• Make sure your car is in good condition! If you really want to save money and keep away from accidents, it’s wise to take good care of your car. If you mess up your car you can end up paying large amounts to fix it and your chances of getting in an accident are greatly enhanced. Part of this includes getting an oil change before you leave, putting air in your tires and making sure your tires aren’t too worn down!
• Know where you are going! This is a great lesson, especially if this is your first time driving to campus. Make sure you have a map and know ahead of time which major highways you will be taking. Another good idea is to have a print out of Google Maps or Yahoo! Maps.
• Remember the tolls! Having a bag of quarters in your car makes paying tolls easier! Just five or ten dollars of quarters in the glove department will keep you from shuffling through the backseat while driving to a toll!

Stalking Alligators In Florida
Alligators were the furthest thing from our minds as my wife Ana and I traveled along the coast of northern Florida. We had paid $23 to camp in our conversion van at a beautiful state park on the beach the night before. In the morning we saw a dolphin swimming near shore.
Then we heard we could camp for free at the isolated campgrounds which dotted the Apalachicola National Forest. Our frugality sent us into alligator country.
We spent two nights in the dark woods next to the dark waters of a slow river. Our only company was an old guy who seemed to be living there, and a nice couple with their two-year-old daughter. Lester was from England, Kari from Texas, and Indya was born in Guatamala. They met in India, of course.
Our little group circled the fire at night, trading stories, and occasionally sneaking down to the water with flashlights to look for the eyes of alligators. We heard splashes in the night, but saw nothing.
The Lake Talquin Monster
When the old guy told us camping was free at Wiliams Landing, on Lake Talquin, we all moved up there for a week. The hot showers convinced us. We continued trading stories around the fire each night, but now we saw all kinds of wildlife. Armadillos walked through camp, giant grey herons fished just offshore from the van, and there were racoons, owls, squirrels, ducks, and turtles. Then was also the “monster.”
March is a great time to get out in the woods in Florida, so I was poking around near a corner of the lake, when I heard the splash. There were no fish that big, I knew, and we had already seen two small alligators sunning themselves the day before. This one had to be a giant. Ana and I returned the next morning, and again heard the splash. It was under the water before we could see it.
In the coming days, we visited the monster each morning once the sun was high enough for him to come out and soak up the heat. We caught enough glimpses to know he was at least ten feet long. Kari and Lester made a “Crocodile Hunter” movie of us stalking it.
In time, it no longer panicked, but just slowly lowered itself into the water, as if getting ready to hunt us properly. We stopped trying to get so close to it. Our gang went to view alligators safely after that, from the tour boat at Wakulla Springs.

Southern Caribbean Travel Guide
If you are planning a vacation to the Southern Caribbean anytime in the near future, Southern Caribbean travel guides are must have items. Located on the boarder of the Caribbean Sea, the Southern Caribbean consists of the nations that border the sea, including Colombia and Venezuela. Since the region is located so close to the earth’s equator, the climate is very warm and tropical, helping to make the Southern Caribbean an extremely popular vacation destination, especially for those seeking warmth and beaches.
Seen from the Caribbean cost, the main portion of Venezuela will rise instantly, while the greenery will be sure to take your breath away. Should You Use Travel Guides?
Is going solo in an unknown area the right way to go, or do you want a tour guide to show you the highlights? I think that you can combine the two ways in one trip and have the best of both worlds. One trip we recently took was to Washington D.C. The best purchase we made was for a bus tour that would take us around the capital and point out all the main sites. Then allow us the next day to travel by foot to the ones we especially wanted to see. We knew ahead of time which Smithsonian building we wanted to see, if the Washington Monument was open to visitors and if you needed to get an advance ticket to take a tour of the White House or visit the Capital Building. It allowed us to plan our three days in the city and see all that we wanted to see. Individual tours to such landmarks as Fords Theater and Arlington Cemetery were tours we were glad we bought. The tour guides for these locations knew tidbits and items of interest that we would never have found out on our own.
Lets look at the San Francisco Bay Area which is another one of my favorite vacation spots and my family has many pleasant and happy memories of our visits to that area. Some areas are so familiar to tourists that its possible to view the attractions on your own. That allows you to take your time and go at your own pace. Fishermans Wharf and Pier39 are good examples. Just by walking a few blocks you can tour Aquarium of the Bay, take a cruise of San Francisco Bay, visit the world famous Ripleys Believe It or Not Museum and spend some down time at the Riptide Arcade on Pier 39. The antique carousel is a beautiful site and an attraction for all ages.
If youre going solo on this trip, you could consider buying a San Francisco CityPass. This special buy will give you tickets to five attractions, unlimited rides on the Cable Cars and an option ticket to use at the Legion of Honor or Academy of Science & Steinhart Aquarium. You are allowed nine days from the date you first start using your CityPass to visit each attraction and seven days for unlimited Cable Car rides.
Some attractions are worth having a tour guide for. If you go to Alcatraz Island, you have a choice of going solo, having a live tour guide or being guided by earphones which trigger the points of interest as you arrive at them. I would recommend the live tour guides. I have gone all three ways, and I received more enjoyment by someone telling me items of interest I know I had missed on previous tours.
Chinatown Walking Tours are tour guided must see. It gives you a behind the scenes look of colorful Chinatown. The tour covers, history, traditions of the local people and culture that you probably wouldnt know or see by traveling alone. The lions at the entrance of Chinatown are awesome to see!
San Francisco also offers over 30 fun and free walking tours of San Francisco. For more information on these free tours, go to www.sfcityguides.org.
The same goes with Napa valley tours. Its possible to drive to the area and go solo, but you will want to take guided tours of some of the vineyards and wine tasting rooms. If you are driving and just taking your leisurely time, I would recommend this way to see the beautiful sights of the wine country.
Another driving tour that is popular is the 17-mile drive down the coast. It winds around giving you glimpses of beautiful mansions and spectacular views. It will take you to Carmel and to Pebble Beach Golf Club.
One of my most popular tours is the Winchester Mystery House. Its located in San Jose, an easy drive from San Francisco and Oakland and is worth the ticket cost. This unusual house can be toured many times and with each tour guide, you will learn something new about the eccentric Mrs. Winchester who believed the spirits told her to have the sound of continuing construction going on in her home to avoid death. This led to many quirks and funny sights in the house since Mrs. Winchester served as her own architect. She kept crews busy 24 hours a day, 365 days a year for many years. I loved the stairs leading to nowhere, and the built in magnifying glass in the window looking out over the garden. Ive seen it four times, and will probably go back. Rumor has it, there was a wine cellar that was boarded up and sealed away. I wonder if it has been found yet!
You can go solo to attractions or take a guided tour. Its your choice and you can choose whichever would give you the most memorable experience. I recommend both.

Selecting A Family Travel Destination: No Need To Forgo Hip
Selecting A Family Travel Destination: No Need To Forgo Hip Or Charm
Small hotels are adapting to family needs, and becoming an attractive alternative to resorts and large hotel chains.
Out of guilt or a need to maximize the amount of time we spend with our children, we have convinced ourselves for years that a family vacation requires sacrificing the interests of the parents to satisfy the needs of the kids. Thus whether traveling half way around the world or driving a mere two hours from home many of us are heading to the same location: a child-friendly resort.
This need not to be the rule. Many independent hotels and lodges have discovered how to make an adult environment work for kids and may be more child welcoming than those that bill themselves as child-friendly.
Not surprisingly, smaller hotels, inns and lodges – many of them luxurious – are leading the pack. The atmosphere is cozy and the service, more personalized. In addition, your family will probably get more exposure to the local culture – not to mention cuisine – in a smaller hotel than is possible in a big international resort.
Children profit the most. Many cultures embrace kids. Thus a large part of the experience in countries such as Argentina and Turkey is the interaction with the locals. Exploring other cultures provides children with a unique education; it broadens their horizon and helps them to learn more about life.
Things to keep in mind
Some smaller hotels may not offer round-the-clock service or traditional in-room services, such as minibar, tv and video games but are likely to be more spontaneous, warm your baby’s bottle with a smile or offer your child a dish that is not on the menu.
Children’s meals may mean that kids are not allowed in the dinning room. Aside from providing parents with a reprieve, kids-only meals usually offer food they like and give them a chance to make new friends.
No kids clubs. Relax. While it may take a day or two and a bit parental encouragement, kids will rediscover how easy it is to make friends and create fun, on their own.
If the environment is relaxed, children will be relaxed as well.
In a smaller hotel, you are likely to feel comfortable allowing your kids to explore on their own.
Rules of thumb
Review the hotels website. Find out if it belongs to a local or an international association. Is it recommended by your travel agent or a leading tour operator? Has it been rated?
If the website does not mention children, they may not be welcome. A telephone call or email will avoid unwanted surprises.

Safe web site booking of your discount travel package
Many claim that they serve the best discount offers in flight tickets and save rate hotels. With the growth in travel market and changing psychology of people who prefer to book online for their travel needs there is mushrooming of websites everyday.
Typically travel websites contain a search form and some details about the places and some banners. But many search forms doesnt work or rather slow comparing to the fast world of Travel. Searching the world of database pertaining to hotels , flights or cruises needs the provider to store and process updated information. Search engine should be efficient enough to search, consolidate and display the required information of the browser.
Most often websites fail in doing so. For example in flight search, you may be happy to see a cheap price on display with one stop. If you falsely book without looking at the stop hours, you will end up wasting several hours for the second hop. Some hotel search engines first show you list price hotels and then save rate hotels in that order. But you may save lot of money with hot deal save rate hotels if booked online.
Next there is a question of whom to believe and who to rely on. Are they really following the guidelines of privacy and security?
Do they stick on to the commitments they made at the time of booking?
Is it backed by network of travel industry? These are some of the questions you should raise in your mind before committing yourself. Customer live support should be there at any time for you to verify. The website should be able to provide link for status verification of your reservation and for cancellations as well.
There is lot of developments in todays technology. The customers can track the flights live position where it is now flying etc., Many sites provide this facility online for their clients. If you are buying in your currency which is different from what is followed in the website, check if the website follows the standard money exchange rates. Some times you may loose money heavily in exchange conversion rates.
Status tracking should always be possible from the website. Let it be flight or Hotel reservation the browsers should be able to track the status for upgrades, monitoring and cancellations using their reservation ID. Or else you will be kept in dark about the status.

Romanian travel guide
A place that has seen political turmoil to the hardest extent but has stood the test of time. A place where mysteries unfold around every corner. Where the nature has bestowed its greatest gifts. Welcome to Romania. Until the modern history was being written Romania was mainly under the influence of the wars. Then it was gripped in the hands of the communist regimen. Despite the wraths of wraths of time the country has stood erect and today it is one of the culturally advanced and educationally pioneering countries of the world.
The historical importance of the country is established by the presence of the numerous castles all over the place. The main attraction of the tourists to this country is its magnificent castle. Build in the ancient times, they still sing the lore of the European grandeur and Romanian past. The atmosphere in them is filled with mysticism and its a once in a life experience that every tourists takes back. The Peles, Corvin are two of most famous castles of Romania. Conducted tours take the tourists around the castles giving them information about the historical facts.
As most European nations Romania too has a rich arts and cultural history. The architecture of the country makes it stand out form the lot. The historical curves on the famous buildings give then a unique royalty. Bucharest, the capital city, is also the cultural capital of the country. The village life of Romania is depicted in a museum dedicated to it. The Village museums answer all questions in the minds of the tourists about he rural backdrop of the country. The painted monasteries of Bucovina stand there since the 1500s and are an embodiment of the great architectural history of Romania.
Its not hard to find great people from this European nation but one prince that has made this country a legend is of Transylvania. The Dracula is a legendry character, which has had a lasting impression on the people of all ages and backgrounds. The castle of the Dracula stands in all its magnificence in Transylvania. Myths apart it has now become one of the most urbanized areas of the country. However the mysterious sensation still keep the tourists dumbfound.
Bucharest, the capital is situated in the Wallachia region in the southern part of Romania. It has got all the political activity. It has gained world repute in the field of education. An international college for medicine is situated in Bucharest, which attracts students from all over the world. The French influence on the city is evident by the architecture on many buildings of the city. It has been christened as little Paris due to this very reason. How ever the beauty of the planning of the city has left it look very green and silent. Its a soothing experience to be in any Romanian city and Bucharest tops the list. One thing seldom found in Europe is found in Bucharest in abundance legalized gambling. The city offers some of the best casino rooms and coupled with the fact that it is legal makes it a favorite among the tourists. The typical cuisine of Romania is rich with beacon and meat. The desserts also have their distinctive taste.
The country having undergone harsh times in the political oppression could not explore all possibilities of tourism. Now it is coming out with ecotourism programs to attract tourists. Way to go!
